Yesavage authored a masterclass on the mound and Davis Schneider launched a home run on the game's initial offering as the Blue Jays beat the Los Angeles Dodgers six to one on Wednesday, moving within one victory of their first championship since 1993.
The 22-year-old Yesavage, who only reached the big leagues in September, struck out 12 without issuing a walk – setting a new World Series record. The first-year pitcher allowed one run on three hits across seven innings. He started the season in Class A before sparse crowds, but has now started and won two of Toronto’s three victories in this seven-game set.
Toronto’s hitters gave him breathing room almost immediately. On the initial throw, Schneider drilled a 97-mile-per-hour heater and sent it over the left-field fence. Immediately after, Vladimir Guerrero Jr followed with another blast to nearly the same spot. It marked the historic first for the Fall Classic that the game began with two straight homers, stunning the crowd before most had taken their places.
Yesavage then went to work. He fanned five in a row between the second and third innings, establishing a new rookie mark before Hernández ended the run with a solo shot in the third inning to make it two to one. That was the nearest the Dodgers came.
In the fourth inning, Daulton Varsho smacked a triple to right field after a fielding error, and Ernie Clement lifted a sacrifice fly to plate the run for a three to one lead. The Dodgers' bats remained quiet from there. After a six-run output in an 18-inning game, they’ve scored a mere four times in nearly 30 innings.
The Dodgers starter persisted for over six frames but couldn’t escape the seventh after the bases were packed. The two inherited runners scored – via a wild pitch and one more on a base hit – to push the lead to four runs. A single in the eighth provided the final margin.
Yesavage was cheered off the field from the Blue Jays supporters, and the pen closed it out. The relief corps each tossed a shutout frame to secure the victory, combining for three strikeouts while preserving the rookie’s masterpiece.
The Dodgers, who rearranged their batting order in search of a spark, again struggled to get going. Their star slugger went hitless in four at-bats and is now hitless in seven at-bats since setting a World Series on-base record in the third game.
Now leading the series three games to two, Toronto return home with two opportunities to win it all. Game 6 is Friday night at Rogers Centre.
