An ex- public official found guilty of attacking two young men encountered via work was given to nearly six years in detention.

Legal Proceedings

Gareth Ward, 44, has been in jail since mid-year after judicial panel determined his guilt of raping an individual and attacking another individual, in separate incidents in 2013 then 2015.

Ward served the oceanfront municipality of the district in the New South Wales legislature from the year 2011. He left his position as a government official when the claims surfaced in 2021 but declined to leave the legislature and was re-elected in last year.

Judgment Information

The presiding officer the court official took into account his visual impairment of sight disability in the ruling and found "no different consequence other than detention could be considered".

The defendant, who appeared via video-link at the courthouse, will complete at least 45 months in prison before he can seek early release.

The court official said the court needs to "deliver a strong warning to potential criminals that sexual offendings like these will be subject to salutary penalties".

Additional Information

The judge added Ward had "avoided punishment for multiple years and lived freely absent a treatment or punishment for his crimes during those years".

After his conviction, the politician initiated a rejected court challenge to remain in parliament and stepped down just prior to the legislature could oust him.

Defense attorneys has stated earlier he intends to appeal the guilty verdict.

Trial Evidence

Ward's lengthy proceedings in the judicial venue heard that he asked a inebriated teenager to his home in 2013 and indecently assaulted him three times, despite his attempts to fight back.

Subsequently, he attacked a young office worker at his property after a function at government offices.

He had argued the later assault was fabricated, and that the other complainant was inaccurate regarding their interaction from the earlier year.

The state's attorneys contended that striking similarities in the accounts of the victims, who were unacquainted with one another, demonstrated they were being honest.

A jury debated for three days before delivering the findings of guilt.

The political exit prompted a special election in his constituency in September, which was claimed by the challenger.
