President Emmanuel Macron Renominates Lecornu as French PM Following A Period of Political Turmoil

President Emmanuel Macron has asked his former prime minister to come back as the nation's premier just days after he stepped down, triggering a stretch of intense uncertainty and instability.

Macron made the announcement on Friday evening, following gathering all the main parties collectively at the official residence, except for the representatives of the extremist parties.

Lecornu's return was unexpected, as he declared on national TV just 48 hours prior that he was not interested in returning and his “mission is over”.

There is uncertainty whether he will be able to assemble a cabinet, but he will have to hit the ground running. The new prime minister faces a deadline on Monday to put next year's budget before lawmakers.

Political Challenges and Fiscal Demands

The Élysée said the president had assigned him to build a cabinet, and Macron's entourage implied he had been given full authority to proceed.

Lecornu, who is one of the president's key supporters, then issued a long statement on X in which he agreed to take on responsibly the assignment assigned by the president, to do everything to finalize financial plans by the December and tackle the common issues of our countrymen.

Partisan conflicts over how to bring down government borrowing and balance the books have led to the ouster of several leaders in the recent period, so his challenge is enormous.

Government liabilities in the past months was almost 114% of economic output (GDP) – the third largest in the eurozone – and this year's budget deficit is projected to amount to 5.4 percent of the economy.

The premier said that no one can avoid the necessity of fixing France's public finances. Given the limited time before the conclusion of his term, he warned that anyone joining his government would have to delay their political goals.

Leading Without Support

Adding to the difficulty for Lecornu is that he will face a vote of confidence in a National Assembly where Macron has lacks sufficient support to back him. His public standing hit a record low recently, according to a survey that put his approval rating on 14 percent.

Jordan Bardella of the National Rally party, which was left out of consultations with party leaders on Friday, said that the decision, by a president out of touch at the presidential palace, is a “bad joke”.

The National Rally would immediately bring a vote of no confidence against a struggling administration, whose only reason for being was fear of an election, Bardella added.

Seeking Support

The prime minister at least understands the obstacles he faces as he tries to establish a cabinet, because he has already used time this week meeting with factions that might participate in his administration.

Alone, the central groups cannot form a government, and there are splits within the conservative Republicans who have supported Macron's governments since he lost his majority in recent polls.

So he will seek progressive groups for future alliances.

As a gesture to progressives, officials suggested the president was evaluating a pause to portions of his highly contentious retirement changes enacted last year which raised the retirement age from 62 up to 64.

That fell short of what socialist figures desired, as they were expecting he would select a leader from their side. Olivier Faure of the Socialists commented “since we've not been given any guarantees, we won't give any guarantee” to back the prime minister.

Fabien Roussel from the Communists stated following discussions that the left wanted real change, and a premier from the president's centrist camp would not be supported by the French people.

Greens leader Marine Tondelier expressed shock Macron had provided few concessions to the left, adding that “all of this is going to turn out very badly”.
