British authorities has added an additional eleven new countries to its travel alert roster regarding the risks of methanol contamination from contaminated beverages.
This updated advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Just recently, officials had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, after a number of notable events such as the fatal loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being advised that even small amounts of methanol can lead to vision loss or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hours.
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol typically used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for ingestion.
Although it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.
But in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.
Authorities official a senior official said that every traveler should be aware of the indicators of methanol poisoning.
"When you are consuming alcohol overseas, choose well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer said.
"If something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention right away."
The complete register of countries identified as presenting a danger of methanol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
