United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President Before White House Visit

Security Council representatives gave the green light to an American proposal to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington trip the coming week.

He became provisional head of state following his leadership in a rebel offensive that drove out Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of civil war.

America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions in his role as head of the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the extremist organization. America delisted the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations during July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the sanctions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and to friendly nations for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."

Imminent Washington Talks

President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week follows President Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the war-torn country.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened on their first occasion in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the region.

After that meeting, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting is not Sharaa's first trip to the United States this year. This past fall, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to present to the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

In his speech, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
